Advanced Nyanshology

That most iconic of Nigerians, the one and only Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, was born on this day in 1938. It is right to celebrate more the life - rather than the death - of a man who like many in the Kuti clan, lives up to the meaning of the family name - 'one who never dies'. In commemoration of the birth of one of the very greatest Nigerians ever, there is something of a cultural event going on in the Nigerian blogsphere. Not to nit-pick, but this transliteration of "nyash" is sourced from Ben Okri, who should know better. Scholars of pidgin are well aware that the correct spelling is "yansh!" with the exclamation. Honestly! The "y" is important in order to get the right... emphasis. It is a thoroughly Nigerian tradition, Yanshology, and I would prefer it if we held ourselves to the highest standards of intellectual discourse.
