Adieu Ebereonwu

Special Reading For EBEREONWU

A special reading-cum- meeting of all creative writers resident in Lagos, under the aegis of Association of Nigerian Authors, Lagos Branch (ANA Lagos), holds next week, Saturday, May 12, 2007. The reading is dedicated to the fond memory of Ebereonwu, a poet, playwright, movie producer/director and member of the State Branch of ANA who passed away in the first week of April, 2007.

Writers and aspiring writers are expected to read copiously from his literary works, which include:

  • Suddenly God Was Naked (1995)
  • Cobweb Seduction (1997)
  • Insomniac Dragon (2000)
  • Unpublishable Poems (2004)
The reading, which will be spiced with exciting recitations, performances and readings from creative works dedicated to the memory of Ebereonwu, will present the right atmosphere for the exhibition of creative talents. All (published) authors are therefore implored to bring copies of their books for presentation and sale at the event.

The up-and-coming ONILEAGBON Theatre, that recently celebrated the first anniversary of the troupe’s foundation, will also be around to add colour to the great event.

Venue: Cultural Hall
National Gallery of Art (Aina Onabolu Complex)
National Theatre, Iganmu, Lagos.
Time: 2.00 p.m. prompt

Best wishes,

Folu Agoi

  1. You should be a literary agent, for African talent, except you're an artist.

  2. Thanks Renegade,

    A literary agent, now that's a thought.

"except" I'm an artist - true, that. See the limitations of artistry, Renegade?

Movie Producer/Director, ‘ this book is meant to celebrate the life, times and vision of the late arts activist, whose published works include Suddenly God

    Lodge (2006).

Some of the movies he scripted and produced are The Intruder, Sweet Sixteen, hers of Men, King of The
Jungle Piccadilly and Salt and Pepper.

Born Paul Obinali Ebereonwu, in 1968, Ebereonwu, as the late artiste preferred to be called, was buried on May 3, 2007, in Amucha, Durubiakan/Njaba Local
Government of Imo State. Ebereonwu studied English and Literature at the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU),
    Zaria.

He died on Good Friday, April 13, 2007, after an auto crash between Alaka bus stop, Surulere, Lagos,

Ebereonwu was a fellow renegade. Whenever I did any of my 'naughty ' poems, he would talk to me later and say 'kai, Abi you baddddddddd! I hear you o' and we would laugh.
It was shocking to hear of his death especially after we just lost Dike Omeje recently and we're trying to survive that. The last time I saw Ebereonwu was at Angie Nwosu's house when we went to celebrate her son's birthday. He and Hyacinth kept urging me to drink more but I had to go home and I still lived with Mami (so I knew better than to get home in a state)
    Another light estinguished
A little corner of the world darkened
    Again, we stumble.
    Sleep well Brother
    Through your unshattered spirit
    Sleep well.
